Those artistic products are well known as “Inami-Sclupture” which is produced as luxury traditional handmade art craft. There are only few craft artists who acquired Inami technique and this method has been used for restoration of traditional buildings in Japan.

But why is this sculpture so valuable?

The reason behind is because it has almost 600 years of history and became a representative carving technique in Japan as well as getting a lot of attentions from overseas.

History of “INAMI carving”

The history of Inami carving started in 1390, when the emperor ordered to construct a branch temple named after “Inami”. The proficient skill and aesthetical decorations

were highly praised in the public and this artistic carving style was used for lots more buildings. Especially, Inami style was applied to construction of world heritage sites such as Higashi-Hongan Temple, Tsukiji-Hongan Temple and Nikko-Toushougu.

Inami style was inherited by posterities time to time, and perception of this carving art is shifted from luxury temple craft to private housing interior especially for traditional Japanese houses.

In 1914, Inami craft won the gold prize in Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Expo and nominated as “traditional Japanese industrial art” by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Nowadays, there are about 300 learners from all over Japan who are willing to take a lesson of this art craft technique and Inami style is recognized as one of the most valuable traditional sculptures in Japan.
