2.How does the softening process work

The softening process consists of passing raw water containing hardness through a bed of cation resin in sodium form.

The hardness ions Ca & Mg are taken up by resin and in exchange,and the sodium ions are relinquished from the resin.

This is called the service cycle.

What is a softener?

Softening by ion exchange resin is the most common and probably the easiest method of removing Hardness ( that is

calcium and magnesium) from water and render the water suitable for utility Purpose . As the name implies ion exchange

is a process in which undesirable ions are exchanged For more desirable ions.

What problems are caused by hard water?

Hard water does not lather easily with soap. This causes problems during washing and bathing and Prevents proper

cleaning. Hard water can also cause scaling in pipes, fittings and storage tanks. Scaling in geysers can increase the

electricity consumption bills. Hard water is also bad for the skin and hair.

How does the softening process work?

What is Regeneration of the Softener ?

Raw water will continue to get softened till the resin gets exhausted. Bringing back the resin to it Original form is called

regeneration. Softener resin is regenerated by sodium chloride of 10- 15 % Concentration. Depending on the softener

design, the regeneration may need to be done every day or Every few days or every week and month
