Ammonium polyphosphate is an inorganic salt of polyphosphoric acid and ammonia. The chain length (n) of this polymeric compound is both variable and branched, can be greater than 1 000. Longer chain APPs(n >1000) show more thermal stability and low water solubility than the short chain APP s (n < 100).

Usually, ammonium polyphosphate divide into two main families. Crystal phase I APP (APP I) and Crystal phase II APP (APP II). Crystal phase II APP (APP II) start to decompose at above 300 °C far more higher than Crystal phase I APP(150 °C).

Ammonium polyphosphate plus synergetic products like pentaerythritol derivatives, carbohydrates and spumific agents (melamine etc.) can obtain maximized material performances. High performance ammonium polyphosphate should be compatible with the polymer matrix, insoluble in water, has good flowability and good thermal stability to provide a larger processing window.

As ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is a non-reactive, inorganic material, it is compatible with many resins and polymers. however, APP is limited to processing temperatures between 190 and 210°C. though its decomposion temperature is above 300°C, mechanical stress and shear during extrusion and combined chemical materials need to be considered. Ammonium polyphosphate is suitable for PP/PE extruction. 20-30% dosage can reach UL 94 V0(1.5mm)
